Matt Grzelcyk, a native of Boston, grew up in Charlestown with his father John working as part of TD Garden’s Bull Gang. After attending Boston University and playing for Penguins assistant coach David Quinn, he was drafted by the Bruins in 2012. Grzelcyk stayed with the Bruins until signing a one-year deal with the Penguins this summer.

Adjusting to a new city and team has been significant for Grzelcyk, but he is already feeling at home. “It kind of reminds me of Boston a little bit. It’s a blue-collar city, but very loyal fan base, everyone's got each other's back,” he said.

Grzelcyk appreciates stepping into a veteran locker room similar to his experience with the Bruins. “They know how the league works... so you're able to come to the rink, focus, ready to get your work in,” he noted.

Penguins coach Mike Sullivan sees potential in Grzelcyk's abilities on the ice. "For a guy that may not be the biggest guy on the ice, he's a fierce competitor," Sullivan said. He praised Grzelcyk's puck-moving ability and believes it will help their game strategy.

In an interview after training camp practice, Grzelcyk shared memories from his draft experience and personal interests. He recalled being uncertain about getting picked and described Pittsburgh as beautiful during his visit.

Grzelcyk also discussed his evolving fashion sense since his draft photo days when he wore an oversized gray pinstriped suit from Macy’s. He mentioned having always been interested in fashion and considering it as a future career option after hockey.

Reflecting on influences within fashion among teammates, he highlighted David Pastrnak's style: “It’s not only what you wear; it’s how you wear it.” This mutual interest helped them bond over time.
