PITTSBURGH – Oneil Cruz, previously known for his unique presence at shortstop due to his large frame, will transition to center field. This decision was announced by Manager Derek Shelton and General Manager Ben Cherington before Monday's game.

"I think as of right now, we're looking at him as a center fielder,” Shelton stated.

“We really believe this is a huge opportunity for both him and our team, both,” Cherington added. “That’s our mindset. We believe that will be his mindset going into it.”

The shift coincides with the Pirates activating Nick Gonzales from the injured list on Monday. Isiah Kiner-Falefa, who had been filling in at second base since being acquired at the Trade Deadline, will move to shortstop with Gonzales' return. Cruz was listed as the designated hitter in Monday's lineup against the Cubs.

Cruz has recorded 24 errors at shortstop this season—12 fielding and 12 throwing—which ranks as the second-most in Major League Baseball. Additionally, he has a -3 Outs Above Average rating.
