Last year, optimism was high among Steelers fans. In three preseason games in 2023, all wins, the Steelers' first-team offense scored touchdowns on all five of their possessions. The team converted four out of five third downs and demonstrated an ability to score both on long runs and passes.

However, once the regular season began, the performance drastically changed. The offense managed only five touchdowns over 70 possessions in five games.

This year presents a different scenario. In two preseason losses to Houston and Buffalo, the first-team offense has yet to score a touchdown in eight possessions, converting just one out of nine third downs. Despite this, there is a sense that the team is on a better path due to a more professional design and approach.

Coordinator Arthur Smith brings extensive experience with five seasons as an NFL coordinator or head coach and 15 years at the professional level. His career started under Mike Munchak at Tennessee and continued through tenures with Ken Whisenhunt, Mike Mularkey, and Mike Vrabel.

On the eve of the preseason opener, Coach Mike Tomlin commented on Smith's impact: "When you've been a head coach, it forever changes you in a lot of ways as it pertains to ball and coaching. I think it does help you evolve as a play-caller or offensive coordinator."

Smith has had limited post-minicamp time with starting quarterback Russell Wilson due to Wilson's calf injury during training camp. Nonetheless, Wilson’s track record speaks for itself; over 12 NFL seasons he has averaged 27.8 touchdowns per season with consistent productivity.

Wilson’s professionalism extends beyond his statistics. He is known for his work ethic and leadership qualities which earn him credibility among teammates. During training camp at Saint Vincent College, he engaged regularly with fans and media while expressing respect for the Steelers franchise.

After the loss to Buffalo, Wilson addressed reporters: "There's highs, there's lows... We had a great practice on Thursday... There's a lot of good that goes unseen sometimes." He emphasized diligence and urgency despite preseason results.

The offensive line remains under development but shows promise with young talents like Broderick Jones and Troy Fautanu improving over time. A stronger running game could emerge from this group if given proper opportunities.

Wilson reiterated his commitment: "I think the sense of urgency is always high... It's going to be hard... We're going to do the work."

The Steelers aim to pair an effective offense with their dynamic defense for success this season. However, it will require patience as they develop their strategy further.
