In a recent interview, Tomlin discussed various aspects of his team's performance and coaching strategies following the preseason opener against Houston. He addressed concerns about the team's sloppy play and how it can serve as a teaching tool despite being disappointing.
"Results like that get people's attention, and attention is good, particularly in terms of development at this time of year," Tomlin said. However, he emphasized the importance of avoiding such performances: "You just don't want to play like that."
Tomlin highlighted the significance of film review in improving team performance. "The film review is a significant component of the get-better cycle," he noted. "We had some significant meetings in that regard."
When asked if anger plays a role in his coaching, Tomlin responded affirmatively. "If it's real, I do. Because I just think it's important that we be authentic and transparent."
Regarding possession downs, Tomlin pointed out specific instances where the team failed to capitalize on winnable situations: "The longer the distance, the more winnable it is... We had a third-and-16 where they got 15 yards."
Tomlin also elaborated on his phrase "scared money doesn't make money," explaining it means not getting tight during critical moments and taking calculated risks for greatness.
On turnovers being part of calculated risks, he acknowledged their existence but stressed understanding and managing them: "Certainly, the more aggressive you are, that opens you up for potential negativity."
Discussing September football in the NFL, Tomlin said it depends on individual and unit development: "Sometimes you have great continuity in a unit that allows you to mature at a faster rate."
Addressing quarterback decisions for the regular season opener against Buffalo, Tomlin stated Russell Wilson would start but mentioned both Wilson and Justin Fields are vying for the role. "Russ has pole position because of the collective body of work," he said.
Tomlin emphasized clarity over timing when making such decisions: "I won't make the wrong decision for the essence of time."
Regarding gunners on special teams, Tomlin highlighted speed as crucial due to long grass components: "Speed is the common denominator." He praised Miles Boykin's skills despite not being particularly fast.
Finally, Tomlin spoke about camp-closing activities like Home Run Derby and Rookie Show as valuable team-building exercises: "Good teams capture that which you cannot measure." He described informal interactions among players as essential for growth.
Living with players in Rooney Hall serves both disciplinary and mentoring purposes for Tomlin. "I'm in the middle of the dorm... I see and hear everything that goes on in that building," he concluded.
