Nick Herbig, outside linebacker for the Pittsburgh Steelers, has been named the Steelers Digest Player of the Week. This recognition comes after a notable performance in the second preseason game against the Buffalo Bills.
During the offseason, it appeared that the Steelers were well-positioned at outside linebacker with T.J. Watt and Alex Highsmith as starters, and Nick Herbig and Markus Golden as primary backups. However, Golden's unexpected retirement raised concerns about depth at the position.
In the 9-3 loss to the Bills, neither Watt nor Highsmith participated, allowing Herbig to showcase his abilities. Playing less than half a game at right outside linebacker, Herbig recorded four tackles, 1.5 sacks, and contributed to two special teams tackles.
Other players considered for this week's honor included safety Miles Killebrew, who made an interception and added a special teams tackle; punter Cameron Johnston, who averaged 56.8 yards on five punts with two inside the 20-yard line; quarterback Justin Fields, who completed 11-of-17 passes for 92 yards with no touchdowns or interceptions and rushed for 42 yards on eight carries; wide receiver Dez Fitzpatrick, who had two catches for 32 yards and a special teams tackle; and outside linebacker Julius Welschof, whose fourth-quarter sack may bolster his chances of securing a backup spot.
