The University of Pittsburgh will be closed on Monday, January 19, in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Classes will not be held and many faculty and staff members will have the day off as it is a paid federal holiday.

Campus transportation services will operate differently for the holiday. Pitt campus shuttles, including routes 10A, 20A, 30C and SafeRider, will follow a modified schedule while Pittsburgh Regional Transit buses are set to run on their regular weekday timetable.

Dining services across campus will have varied hours depending on the location. Students and staff are encouraged to check the current Pitt Eats hours of operation for specific details.

Panther Central and residence halls will remain open with normal operations during the holiday closure. However, retail locations such as University Store on Fifth, Maggie and Stella’s, and The Pitt Shop will be closed for the day.

In recognition of Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy, the university has organized service activities throughout the day. According to the announcement: “In honor of King’s legacy, Pitt will also host service and engagement opportunities throughout the day. These PittServes events bring together students, faculty and staff for volunteer projects with local community partners. All volunteer opportunities have been filled, but you can still join the waitlist.”
