Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin addressed the media about the team’s approach following their recent loss to Cleveland and preparations for a decisive game against the Baltimore Ravens. Tomlin emphasized maintaining consistency after a defeat, stating, “Our process, if we believe in it, I need to display really, really solid consistency there, win or lose.” He explained that after each game, the staff and players review their performance as individuals and as a group to develop improved strategies for upcoming games.

Discussing his message to the team midweek, Tomlin said, “I pay respect for big games with urgency and preparation…it was about setting a trajectory of professionalism and urgency that reflects how we want to perform on game day.”

When asked about the players’ response after the Browns game, Tomlin expressed satisfaction: “We’ve had a really good week. We’ve worked hard and smart…you work hard and smart, you focus your energies. There’s a heavy emphasis on walkthrough and detail and gaining an understanding through communication.”

Tomlin acknowledged growth in adapting to playing without wide receiver DK Metcalf. “Certainly we’re not going to sit on our hands and haven’t,” he said. “We’re adapting and adjusting some division of labor…based on that experience.”

He also commented on quarterback Aaron Rodgers’ self-assessment after Cleveland: “I always do. I think we’re all our toughest critics…I respect that component of self-evaluation, and I’m in agreement.”

Addressing video review sessions with Rodgers and other quarterbacks, Tomlin described them as strategic discussions focused on defensive tendencies and situational management: “We talk strategy of opposing defensive architects…It’s all based on getting an understanding of the personality of a defensive play-caller and a defense.”

Regarding linebacker Patrick Queen’s role against Baltimore, Tomlin stated, “I need him to be defensive quarterback…not only distribute formal communication to the rest of his unit…but also the informal things that come with the position.”

On defending against Ravens fullback Patrick Ricard and running back Derrick Henry, Tomlin noted Ricard’s impact as a blocker: “Picard is a point-of-attack blocker in their run game…They don’t care if we know. And that’s how good Picard is at his job.” He further discussed Baltimore’s running scheme as requiring careful allocation of defenders due to multiple threats including Lamar Jackson.

Tomlin analyzed adjustments needed when facing more zone defense from Baltimore: “Sometimes you’ve got to take what they’re willing to give you…if they’re playing in an umbrella shell, we’ve got to be willing to…engineer drives.” He highlighted veteran Adam Thielen’s value against zones due to his awareness.

The rivalry between Tomlin’s Steelers and John Harbaugh’s Ravens will mark its 40th matchup. On whether anything new can emerge from such familiarity, Tomlin said both new elements and strategic familiarity are present: “There certainly can be new things…the talent afforded us oftentimes dictates schematics.” He compared it to previous intense divisional matchups.

This final regular season meeting carries high stakes—the winner advances to the playoffs while the loser is eliminated. Tomlin expects this dynamic will define the contest: “Games like this…come down to the will of the men…and that’s what I’m excited about.”
