DK Metcalf returned to the Pittsburgh Steelers locker room on Monday, following a two-game suspension. His absence had a significant impact on the team’s offense, as he accounted for over half of the team’s receiving targets, receptions, yardage, and touchdowns prior to his suspension.
During Metcalf’s suspension, the Steelers struggled offensively. They failed to score a touchdown in their loss to the Browns, with receivers totaling only 60 yards. However, there was improvement against the Ravens when receivers combined for 141 yards and Calvin Austin caught a game-winning touchdown.
Despite this progress, Metcalf’s earlier performance against the Ravens—148 receiving yards—underscored how much his presence was missed. Head coach Mike Tomlin addressed these challenges at his weekly press conference.
“Sometimes when you lack in significant players, it’s opportunities for others to show what they’re capable of and to accelerate growth and development and cohesion in other areas,” Tomlin said. He highlighted Adam Thielen and Scotty Miller as players who stepped up during Metcalf’s absence.
“Adam Thielen, for example, is a new acquisition for us, and he made some significant plays for us in recent weeks, and, in that, cohesion has probably been accelerated,” Tomlin said.
“Scotty Miller is a guy that’s always ready to make plays for us. He’s not always given an opportunity, but certainly in the two years that he’s been here, man, he’s been a credible playmaker when called upon. He’s displaying some of that in some significant moments over the last several weeks as well.”
Thielen joined the Steelers after being waived by Minnesota on December 1. He quickly became involved in games and contributed key catches—including three third-and-long conversions against Detroit—and continued to produce during starts against Cleveland and Baltimore.
Miller increased his production during Metcalf’s absence as well. Entering the final two games with just four receptions on the season, he recorded five catches while filling in.
Tomlin also noted another positive development: “Our running backs have been a major component of our passing game in recent weeks,” he said. Kenneth Gainwell had eight receptions against Baltimore—a season high—and Jaylen Warren matched his own best with five catches; together they produced 97 receiving yards.
“And I think we all grow as strategists,” Tomlin added. “I think as a collective, as a coaching staff, when you’re faced with adversity, it’s important that you pivot… We felt the effects of it in Cleveland… it was reasonable to expect us all to be better – the players themselves, us as strategists – and I think we displayed that.”
Tomlin hopes that reintegrating Metcalf will combine these gains with renewed offensive strength: “And so hopefully… we get the benefits of all the things that I’ve just discussed – our adaptability… growth of individuals… And you couple that with his presence; hopefully we’re all continually collectively better.”
He also spoke about new receivers building chemistry with quarterback Aaron Rodgers: “Certainly relationships and trust… at the quarterback-receiver combination is significant,” Tomlin said. He pointed out that practice reps were redistributed during Metcalf’s absence which could yield lasting benefits even after his return.
As for Metcalf himself: “I think he’s in a great place. I know that he’s happy to be back; he’s happy to be in this tournament; and he’s ready to go to work.”
