“The Football Town” is a 52-minute film that highlights Western Pennsylvania’s football tradition, spanning youth, high school, college, and professional levels. It explores how local culture and values have influenced the sport and examines the connection between the steel industry and football in the region.
Pat McAfee, a native of Pittsburgh, narrates the documentary. The film features appearances by former Steelers players Bill Cowher, Jerome Bettis, Joey Porter Sr., James Harrison, among others. Youth and high school teams from various communities such as Aliquippa, Homewood, Peters Township, and Steel Valley are also included.
Bill Cowher commented on how football brings together Pittsburgh’s neighborhoods: “It’s a city of bridges, it’s a city of communities – intertwined by competitiveness with each region. So when you play football here, it was personal. It meant something.”
Jerome Bettis described what football means to people in Pittsburgh: “To the people here in Pittsburgh, football is a fabric. It’s like a jacket; it’s the fabric of their lives. They are a part of the team.”
The documentary is presented by U. S. Steel as part of its 125th anniversary celebration and its longstanding ties to Pittsburgh.
The Steelers have played an important role in promoting community engagement through events such as historical celebrations and fan experiences at venues like Acrisure Stadium’s Hall of Honor Museum official website. The team has achieved significant success over its history with six Super Bowl championships official website and has honored key figures such as Terry Bradshaw and Joe Greene through its Hall of Honor official website. As a member franchise of the National Football League official website, these efforts contribute to preserving both sporting achievements and regional heritage.
