Daniel M. Rooney born July 20, 1932, in Pittsburgh

Daniel Milton Rooney was born in Pittsburgh on July 20, 1932. He spent his life connected to the city and its football team, the Pittsburgh Steelers. As team president, owner, and chairman, Rooney led the franchise to six Super Bowl victories and 15 division titles. He introduced the “Rooney Rule” to promote diversity in NFL hiring practices. He also helped shape league policies, including the salary cap and collective bargaining agreements. In 2000, he was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Rooney served as U.S. Ambassador to Ireland from 2009 to 2012 and co-founded The Ireland Funds. He grew up in Pittsburgh’s North Side, attended North Catholic High School, and graduated from Duquesne University. He took part in Steelers operations from a young age and played a central role in the team’s major coaching hires. Rooney died on April 13, 2017, leaving a lasting legacy in sports, policy, and diplomacy.
