This week in City of Pittsburgh history.

Born January 27, 1901 in Coulterville

He was born on January 27, 1901, near Pittsburgh. He took an active role in local sports, boxing and football. In 1933 he paid $2,500 to start an NFL franchise here. That team became the Pittsburgh Steelers. He led as owner and president. He guided the club through early struggles. Under his leadership the team won four Super Bowls in the 1970s. He stepped aside in 1975 but remained chairman. He stayed in Pittsburgh his whole life. He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1964.
