Daniel Rooney died on April 13, 2017
Daniel Milton Rooney, who died in 2017 at age 84, was a key figure in the history of the Pittsburgh Steelers and the city of Pittsburgh. The son of team founder Art Rooney, he spent decades shaping the franchise’s direction as president, owner, and chairman. Under his leadership, the Steelers won six Super Bowl titles, more than any other NFL team at the time. He helped modernize league operations and played a central role in labor negotiations and the introduction of the salary cap. Rooney also created the “Rooney Rule,” aimed at increasing minority representation in coaching. Outside football, he served as U.S. Ambassador to Ireland and co-founded The Ireland Funds. A North Side native and Duquesne University graduate, Rooney remained closely tied to Pittsburgh throughout his life. He is remembered for his role in football, diplomacy, and community involvement. His influence helped define both the Steelers and the NFL.
