Rep. Summer Lee, who has represented Pennsylvania’s 12th district in the U.S. Congress since 2023, shared her views on several pressing issues through a series of tweets on June 17, 2025. Lee, born in Pittsburgh and an alumna of Pennsylvania State University and Howard University, addressed topics ranging from congressional authority over war declarations to Medicaid cuts.
On June 17, Rep. Summer Lee expressed concerns regarding the President’s power to declare war without Congressional authorization. She emphasized that “The President does not have the power to unilaterally declare war. Congressional authorization isn’t optional.” She warned against being misled into another conflict that could have significant consequences for innocent lives.
Later that day, she joined forces with Sen. Williams at East Liberty Family Health Care Center to oppose Republican-led Medicaid cuts. In her tweet, Lee highlighted the potential impact on thousands of individuals in Pennsylvania’s 12th district: “These cuts would mean no chemo for cancer patients, no medicine for seniors, and no speech therapy for kids.” Her stance was clear as she criticized these proposed reductions.
In another statement on June 17, Rep. Lee voiced her disapproval of what she perceives as bipartisan warmongering in Congress. She noted the prevalence of such attitudes among lawmakers from both parties and questioned when being a Democrat became synonymous with supporting military actions abroad: “Not exactly a value of neighbors and families like mine from Braddock or Pittsburgh or anywhere,” she remarked.
Summer Lee has been active in politics since serving in the Pennsylvania House of Representatives from 2019 to 2022 before succeeding Mike Doyle in Congress.
