U.S. Representative Summer Lee, who serves Pennsylvania’s 12th district, has raised concerns over conditions at the Moshannon Valley Detention Center and criticized both Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and The Geo Group in a series of posts on August 25 and 26, 2025.
On August 25, Lee stated she was denied entry to the facility, writing, “I was just denied access to the Moshannon Valley Detention Center with a weak letter from ICE full of lies. There are human beings being held in horrific conditions in this facility. We will keep showing up to do our jobs no matter how hard ICE or the Trump admin tries to hide.”
Later that day, Lee posted about The Geo Group’s political contributions and its role at the detention center: “Had to stop by this sign outside of the Moshannon Valley Detention Center. The Geo Group donated over $1M to Trump’s presidential campaign. Now they’re profiting off of tearing apart families using our taxpayer dollars. The corruption is clear as day.”
On August 26, Lee referenced an individual case involving Kilmar Abrego Garcia: “Just a few days ago, Kilmar Abrego Garcia was reunited with his family after Trump’s lawless admin kidnapped him to El Salvador. Now they want to deport him to Uganda. Kilmar deserves justice, due process, and to remain with his family.”
Summer Lee began representing Pennsylvania’s 12th district in Congress in 2023 after previously serving in the Pennsylvania House of Representatives from 2019 through 2022. She succeeded Mike Doyle in her current congressional seat and resides in Swissvale near Pittsburgh. Born in Pittsburgh in 1987, Lee holds degrees from Pennsylvania State University and Howard University.
