U.S. Representative Summer Lee, who serves Pennsylvania’s 12th district, addressed recent industrial incidents and environmental concerns in a series of posts on X (formerly Twitter) between August 11 and August 12, 2025.
On August 11, Lee commented on the explosion at the U.S. Steel Clairton Coke Works plant: “My team and I are aware of the tragic explosion at the U.S. Steel Clairton Coke Works plant. My heart is with the workers, especially those injured or trapped, their families, first responders, and the entire Clairton community. Please follow local guidance and avoid the area”.
The following day, after receiving updates from officials and company representatives, Lee posted another statement: “Today I was briefed on the explosions at the U.S. Steel Clairton Coke Works plant by U.S Steel and local and state officials. My deepest condolences to the families of the two steelworkers who were killed, and my thoughts are with those injured. I am grateful for the first”.
On August 12, Lee also visited Yukon to address ongoing environmental issues related to MAX Environmental: “For 50+ years, MAX Environmental has poisoned Yukon’s air, water, and soil, leaving families sick and land unsafe. Today I saw it up close and heard from residents. @EPA and @PennsylvaniaDEP must hold MAX accountable so every family can breathe clean air and trust their water.”
Summer Lee has represented Pennsylvania’s 12th district in Congress since 2023 after succeeding Mike Doyle; prior to her current role she served in the Pennsylvania House of Representatives from 2019 to 2022. Born in Pittsburgh in 1987 and currently residing in Swissvale, Lee holds a BA from Pennsylvania State University (2009) as well as a JD from Howard University (2015).
