Heath Miller, the former tight end for the Pittsburgh Steelers, announced his retirement in a statement without seeking much attention. "Today, I informed the Steelers of my plans to retire," Miller stated. He expressed gratitude towards the Rooney Family, Kevin Colbert, Bill Cowher, Mike Tomlin, James Daniel, and others in the Steelers organization for allowing him to fulfill his childhood dream. He also thanked his family and fans.
Miller was selected by the Steelers as their No. 1 pick in the 2005 NFL Draft. Over 11 seasons, he played 167 out of 168 regular-season games and started all 15 postseason games he participated in. His record of 168 regular-season games is unmatched by any other tight end in Steelers' history.
Coach Mike Tomlin praised Miller's career: "It's been an honor and a pleasure to coach him...He has always put the Pittsburgh Steelers first in every aspect of his professional life." Tomlin highlighted Miller's talent, commitment, and unselfishness as defining characteristics that will leave a lasting impact on future players.
During his career with the Steelers, Miller became the all-time leader among tight ends in receptions (592), receiving yards (6,569), and receiving touchdowns (45). He was part of two Super Bowl-winning teams and earned Pro Bowl selections twice. In 2012, he was named team MVP.
Ben Roethlisberger shared his thoughts on Miller's retirement: "To put together a statement is hard because where do you start with Heath Miller?" Roethlisberger emphasized their strong bond over their careers together. "Probably hands down the best teammate I have been a part of."
Miller retired quietly but leaves behind a significant legacy within the team and its history.
