On February 17, 1983, Hall of Fame linebacker Jack Ham announced his retirement from professional football. Drafted by the Pittsburgh Steelers in the second round of the 1971 NFL Draft, Ham spent his entire 12-year career with the team.

Ham's performance as a rookie was impressive, securing a starting position at left outside linebacker after intercepting three passes in a preseason game. Throughout his career, he demonstrated remarkable consistency and resilience, missing only four games over his first ten seasons.

His contributions on the field were recognized through numerous accolades. In 1975, he was named the Football News Defensive Player of the Year. He also earned selections to eight consecutive Pro Bowls and received All-Pro honors six times. Additionally, Ham was chosen for All-AFC recognition seven times.

By the time he retired following the 1982 season, Ham had amassed an impressive record: 25 sacks, 21 fumble recoveries, and 32 interceptions. His total of 53 takeaways remains unmatched by any non-defensive back player.

Ham's legacy extends beyond individual statistics. He was named to several prestigious teams including the NFL's 75th Anniversary Team and All-Time Team, as well as being part of both the Steelers' and NFL's Team of the Decade for the 1970s. Furthermore, he secured a place on the Hall of Fame’s exclusive 50th Anniversary Team alongside Lawrence Taylor.
