The Pittsburgh Steelers' 2024 defensive performance presented a mixed picture of strengths and weaknesses, according to recently released statistics. The team allowed an average of 5.4 yards per play, placing them in the top third of NFL defenses. They were seventh-best in points allowed per drive at 1.88 and maintained an impressive record by forcing three-and-outs frequently.

Despite these achievements, the Steelers faced challenges against passing plays, allowing the eighth-most passing yards per game (228.0) and struggling particularly in their final games with a high yards-per-attempt rate. Their defense was heavily targeted with 11 Personnel formations by opponents and gave up significant yardage to wide receivers aligned out wide.

In contrast, the Steelers excelled in creating turnovers, tying for the league lead with Minnesota at 33 takeaways. T.J. Watt's performance stood out as he led the NFL in forced fumbles and shared the top spot for strip sacks.

Pittsburgh's run defense was strong, allowing just 98.7 rushing yards per game on average, ranking sixth-best overall. They were notably effective when Cameron Heyward was on the field, significantly reducing opponents' rushing efficiency.

The team's strategic use of single-high coverage resulted in low explosive play rates against them but exposed vulnerabilities when switching to two-high coverage schemes.

The Steelers managed to maintain a solid red zone defense percentage at 54.1% and performed well on third downs defensively, trailing only behind Detroit.

In summary, while Pittsburgh's defense showed commendable prowess in some areas such as turnovers and rush defense under certain conditions, it faced difficulties particularly with pass coverage consistency throughout the season.
