The Pittsburgh Steelers saw significant contributions from their rookie class in the 2024 season, with linebacker Payton Wilson standing out. Selected as the 98th overall pick in the third round of the 2024 NFL Draft, Wilson appeared in all 17 games and started four.
Wilson concluded his rookie season with a commendable performance, recording 72 tackles, including 47 solo stops and three tackles for loss. His defensive prowess also included two passes defensed, a forced fumble, and two fumble recoveries. One notable recovery was against the Cincinnati Bengals, which he returned for a touchdown during a 44-38 victory at Paycor Stadium.
"I've had the mentality since camp started that I don't want to be looked at like a rookie," Wilson stated. "I want to be held to the same standard as someone who has been here for 10 years."
In addition to his tackling achievements, Wilson made an interception against the Baltimore Ravens by taking the ball from receiver Justice Hill. Fellow linebacker Patrick Queen praised this effort: "That's an All-Pro play...For a rookie to make a play like that is insane."
Wilson was named to CBS Sports' All-Rookie team and credited teammates such as Patrick Queen and Elandon Roberts for guidance throughout his first year. Coach Mike Tomlin noted Wilson's dedication: "He does a good job of just being a humble guy...and learning from them and asking good questions."
During his college career at North Carolina State, Wilson was inducted into its Ring of Honor in 2024. Former Steelers Coach Bill Cowher commended him: "His athletic ability speaks for itself...Payton runs fast and he plays fast."
Cowher highlighted Wilson's adaptability on defense: "He can play off the ball, he can play on the ball...He's proven that with his productivity."
