Parcel Health and Allegheny Health Network (AHN) have announced a new pilot program that aims to introduce Tully Tube, the first paper-based prescription pill bottle, in select AHN hospitals. This initiative marks an important step toward reducing plastic waste in the pharmaceutical sector.
The pilot will commence this spring at retail pharmacies within AHN hospitals, including Allegheny Valley, Canonsburg, Forbes, and Jefferson. The introduction of Tully Tube is part of an effort to address the environmental impact of over 9 billion plastic prescription bottles used annually in the United States.
Parcel Health's CEO Melinda Lee expressed enthusiasm about the partnership with AHN: “We are thrilled to partner with AHN to bring Tully Tubes to their patients.” She emphasized that this initiative represents a move towards a more sustainable pharmaceutical supply chain without sacrificing safety or usability.
Tully Tubes are designed with biodegradable paper bodies and recyclable plastic caps. They provide benefits such as temperature stability and sturdiness, insulating medications from heat and resisting physical force better than traditional vials. Additionally, these tubes offer customization options for pharmacies to enhance patient engagement and communication.
Laura Mark, vice president of pharmacy at AHN, highlighted the network's commitment to sustainability: “AHN is committed to environmentally responsible practices... We are excited to pilot the Tully Tube and explore its potential.”
This collaboration between Parcel Health and AHN aligns with ongoing efforts by AlphaLab Health, an accelerator program supporting health care startups since 2020. Dr. Lee acknowledged the importance of leadership skills developed through AlphaLab Health in positioning Parcel Health as a forward-thinking company.
Dr. Lee also noted the broader implications of this project: “Our work with AHN is a great example of responsible innovation in the pharmaceutical industry.” She suggested that successful collaboration could lead to wider adoption across global health care systems.
