In a recent press conference, Mike Tomlin addressed several topics concerning the Pittsburgh Steelers and their upcoming game against the Cincinnati Bengals. When asked about the Bengals' current situation, which mirrors the Steelers' last season scenario of needing a win to make it to the playoffs, Tomlin stated, "I know our mind-set and our approach to business. I'm not going to pretend to know theirs." He emphasized that this is a crucial game for Cincinnati and expects them to utilize all their resources.
Discussing fourth-and-short situations, Tomlin remarked that such decisions typically occur later in games: "I expect them to play situational decision-making to their regular standard."
Tomlin also analyzed his team's turnover issues during a recent losing streak, explaining that it's about making routine plays consistently: "We've gotta display and live our agenda, and it's as simple as that."
On the Bengals' defensive improvement since December 1st, he attributed it largely to Geno Stone's performance: "The No. 1 catalyst during that span for me has been Geno Stone and his takeaway ability."
Regarding team chemistry versus winning, Tomlin said it's akin to "the chicken or the egg" but stressed assembling good players is essential.
When discussing running backs Najee Harris and Jaylen Warren, he mentioned multiple factors influence playing time decisions: "It's all of the above."
Tomlin was questioned on whether different plays are run with different running backs on the field. He clarified that while they can vary plays based on who is playing, sometimes it comes down to player fatigue.
He commented on Joe Burrow's unique skill set in evading pressure from defenses: "You better do a really good job of a collective rush."
For defending Burrow again after an earlier matchup this season, Tomlin confirmed adjustments are necessary: "'Enough defense' also means 'different defense.'"
On wide receivers Tee Higgins and Ja'Marr Chase's effectiveness together, he noted their ability to exploit single coverage.
T.J. Watt was recognized as Steelers MVP for the fifth time since 1969. Tomlin praised Watt’s consistency despite facing constant schematic challenges from opponents.
Finally, regarding potential contributions from Cole Holcomb (PUP), Roman Wilson (IR), and Logan Lee (IR), he said it's both due diligence and readiness for possible involvement.
