Linebacker T.J. Watt has been named the Pittsburgh Steelers' Most Valuable Player for 2024, marking his fifth time receiving the honor, a record in team history. Watt's recognition comes as he continues to demonstrate his prowess on the field, having started all 16 games this season with notable statistics including 61 tackles and 11.5 sacks.
"It's awesome," said Watt about being voted MVP by his teammates. "It's a great honor that I don't take lightly."
Watt achieved a milestone by recording his 100th career sack against the Dallas Cowboys in Week 5, becoming the second-fastest player to reach this mark in NFL history. Hall of Fame Coach Bill Cowher praised Watt's impact on games, stating, "He is a defensive player of the year candidate."
In addition to his MVP award, Watt was named AFC Defensive Player of the Week for his performance against the New York Giants in Week 8.
Coach Mike Tomlin expressed admiration for Watt's consistent ability to make significant plays: "I just come to expect it because he's got a unique talent."
Despite individual accolades such as being an Associated Press NFL Defensive Player of the Year and leading the league in sacks three times, Watt remains focused on achieving team success. He aims to secure a playoff victory and contribute to winning another Lombardi Trophy for Pittsburgh.
"He's had about every individual award that you can get in this game," said Tomlin. "He realizes his legacy is going to be based on what it is we do in January and February."
Watt emphasized that winning a Super Bowl is now his primary goal: "When I'm done, I want them to say, T.J. Watt, Super Bowl champion."
