The Pittsburgh Chapter of Pro Football Writers of America recently recognized two players from the Steelers for their outstanding contributions during the season. Center Zach Frazier received the Joe Greene Great Performance Award, while linebacker Alex Highsmith was honored with 'The Chief' Award.
The Joe Greene Great Performance Award, named after the Hall of Fame player, is presented annually to the top rookie on the Steelers team. Frazier joins Maurkice Pouncey as only the second center to receive this accolade since its inception in 1984. Reflecting on his achievement, Frazier stated, "It's a great honor... I just focus on how I can get better and make our team better."
Frazier was drafted by the Steelers in 2024 as a second-round pick from West Virginia. He played a crucial role in his college team's offense and continued to uphold that standard with the Steelers despite injuries at his position. He has started 14 games this season and missed two due to an ankle injury.
On receiving 'The Chief' Award, Highsmith expressed gratitude: "It's an honor... I know how much this award means to the Rooney family." The award honors members of the organization who demonstrate cooperation with media, reflecting Arthur J. Rooney Sr.'s spirit.
Highsmith, now in his fifth NFL season, was selected by Pittsburgh in 2020. Despite facing injuries this year, he remained available for media interactions and contributed significantly when playing. His stats include six sacks and nine tackles for loss across ten games.
Off-field, Highsmith's community efforts earned him recognition as Week 1 NFLPA Community MVP for hosting events like back-to-school giveaways. Fellow linebacker T.J. Watt praised him as a "playmaker" known for making impactful plays during critical moments.
Both awards underscore Frazier's promising start and Highsmith's established presence within both team dynamics and community involvement.
