The Pittsburgh Pirates' pitcher Paul Skenes, who was selected as the No. 1 overall pick in the 2023 MLB Draft, has made a significant impact in Major League Baseball during his rookie season. The former LSU star debuted on May 11 against the Cubs at PNC Park and concluded the season with an impressive record of 11-3 and a 1.96 ERA over 23 starts. His performance earned him the role of starting pitcher for the National League at the All-Star Game held at Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas. Skenes' remarkable first season led to him being voted NL Rookie of the Year and becoming one of three finalists for the NL Cy Young Award.
In a recent Q&A session, Skenes reflected on his accomplishments and shared insights about his experiences in MLB and his plans for the upcoming season.
When asked about being named National League Rookie of the Year, Skenes expressed his appreciation for the recognition: "It’s cool to have that experience and the hardware that comes with it." He acknowledged Masyn Winn from the Cardinals as a tough competitor and noted, "That’s how good the rookie class was."
Discussing his status as a finalist for the NL Cy Young Award alongside Chris Sale of the Braves and Zack Wheeler of the Phillies, Skenes said, "Truthfully, I think being a finalist for the Cy Young Award is a little more meaningful than Rookie of the Year." He emphasized learning from their consistency as something he strives to achieve.
Despite receiving numerous accolades, Skenes maintains focus on playing: "Everything stems from the game and circles back to playing...the awards are not why I play."
Regarding his offseason activities, Skenes mentioned taking some time off but remaining committed to training: "I took three weeks off...but we’ve got about 12 hours because I need to get back and lift in the morning."
Skenes also discussed his relationship with girlfriend Livvy Dunne, an LSU gymnast: "She got to that point in her life a little bit earlier than I did...we’re definitely able to share some of those experiences."
Looking ahead to next season, Skenes expressed optimism about team performance: "We were in it up until then...we’re going to have more self-awareness." He added confidence in team improvement without drastic changes.
Reflecting on his selection by Pittsburgh, he stated: "Obviously, being drafted No. 1 overall was a huge honor," appreciating conversations with team officials like Bob Nutting and Ben Cherington.
Finally, he spoke warmly about fan support: "It’s super humbling...to see them show up at ballpark and root for us."
