Jack St. Ivany, a defenseman born and raised in California, shares his warm-weather essentials, fitting for the scorching temperatures of his home state.
St. Ivany's primary mode of transportation around Manhattan Beach is a Super 73 electric bike. "It’s the easiest mode of transportation to navigate the hills of Manhattan Beach. I ride it everywhere. Parking is tough in the area, so this makes it easy to get around," he says.
For beachwear, St. Ivany prefers Birdwell or Slunks swimsuits paired with Garrett Leight sunglasses, which he received as a gift a few years ago and now considers his go-to pair.
Volleyball is his favorite beach game to play with friends due to its inclusivity and ease of pickup. "It’s the best beach game to play with friends since everyone can play, it’s easy pickup, and you can accommodate any number of people," he explains.
After volleyball, surfing becomes an ideal way for him to cool off in the water. He notes that morning waves are optimal due to lower winds but also enjoys sunset sessions. "With waves being typically 2-5 feet in Manhattan Beach, a long board is preferable to a short board," St. Ivany states. He typically uses a Cobley surfboard made by a local board maker from Hermosa Beach or foam soft top boards called Wavestorms.
Music plays an essential role in his beach experience as well; he uses a JBL boom box to set the mood with country music during weekdays and house dance/tech music on weekends.
His preferred snacks include fresh watermelon, cashews, Topo Chico, and coconut water, all kept cool in a small Yeti cooler.
Finally, Otis, his Fox Red Labrador, often accompanies him on these outings. "He’s a great pup. Really smart and loves chasing the puck when I stickhandle with him in my garage," St. Ivany mentions.
St. Ivany also cherishes driving around in a '72 Ford Bronco that his father fixed up: "He used to work in the car business, so he enjoys going through the process of fixing up older cars."
