The Pittsburgh Steelers have signed cornerback Darius Slay to a one-year contract following his release from the Philadelphia Eagles. Slay, who celebrated his 34th birthday on January 1, has been a significant part of the Eagles’ secondary since joining them in 2020 after a successful stint with the Detroit Lions.
Throughout his 12-year NFL career, Slay has achieved six Pro Bowl selections, recorded 28 interceptions, and made 160 pass breakups. Although he did not secure any interceptions in the 2024 season, he managed to achieve 13 pass breakups.
Slay was drafted by Detroit in the second round in 2013 and is known for his tackling skills and proficiency in man coverage. Over his career, he has allowed only 59.5 percent of passes thrown his way to be completed. Last season, opponents completed just over 60 percent of their attempts against him, indicating that his coverage abilities remain strong.
In joining the Steelers, Slay will provide experience alongside third-year cornerback Joey Porter Jr., offering Porter an opportunity to learn from a seasoned former No. 1 cornerback. This acquisition means Porter will not necessarily have to cover opposing teams’ top receivers unless strategically decided by the Steelers.
Despite missing eight games over the past two seasons due to injuries, Slay has consistently played over 800 defensive snaps each year since 2014 when healthy. His presence rarely leaves the field during games.
With Corey Trice also on the roster as a third-year cornerback, Slay’s addition provides Pittsburgh with three capable options at outside cornerback positions. Both Trice and Porter stand to gain valuable insights from playing alongside Slay, potentially benefiting the team long-term.
