The Pittsburgh Steelers announced on Mar. 11 that they have signed punter Cameron Johnston to a one-year contract.
Johnston, who previously joined the Steelers in 2024 but missed most of the season due to injury, brings eight seasons of experience in the National Football League. He has played for several teams including Philadelphia, Houston, Pittsburgh, Buffalo, and the New York Giants. Over his career, Johnston has punted 458 times for a total of 21,622 yards with a gross average of 47.2 yards per punt and a net average of 42.0 yards. He has placed 185 punts inside the 20-yard line and achieved at least one punt of over 60 yards in each of his first six seasons.
In the previous year, Johnston split time between the New York Giants and Buffalo Bills, appearing in four games and averaging between 44 and 45.5 yards per punt. His stint with Pittsburgh in 2024 was cut short after only two punts due to a season-ending injury during the opener. In Houston during the 2023 season, he played in thirteen games and recorded a career-long punt of seventy-four yards against Carolina while also contributing during postseason play.
Johnston’s earlier achievements include leading the American Football Conference in punts inside the twenty-yard line in both 2021 and 2022 and setting single-season records for gross and net punting averages with Philadelphia in 2018.
