The Pittsburgh Steelers have signed Derrick Harmon, a defensive tackle and their first-round draft pick, to a four-year contract. Harmon was chosen as the 21st overall pick after playing at the University of Oregon.

“He has Steelers DNA,” said Coach Mike Tomlin. “For us it starts inside and up front. This is a guy that is capable of dominating that space versus the run and the pass. We are excited about having him. Really excited about getting him in here and getting started.”

Tomlin emphasized the importance of young talent for building a quality defense, highlighting Harmon’s potential to learn from veteran players like Cam Heyward.

Harmon played one season at Oregon, starting all 14 games in 2024. He earned second-team Associated Press All-America honors, along with recognition from Sporting News and FWAA. In addition, he received second-team All-Big Ten honors by media and third-team by coaches.

In 2024, Harmon recorded 45 tackles, including 27 solo stops, achieved a career-high of 10.5 tackles for loss, five sacks, two forced fumbles, and two fumble recoveries.

Before transferring to Oregon, Harmon spent three seasons at Michigan State where he appeared in 28 games with 15 starts. During his time there, he made 70 tackles with six and a half tackles for loss and three and a half sacks.

Coach Tomlin expressed confidence in Harmon’s capabilities throughout their interactions during recruitment events such as those held in Indianapolis and Pittsburgh.

“I think he has been impressive in every step of the process for us,” said Tomlin. “His tape was impressive. We had great visits with him in Indy. He came to Pittsburgh, and we had a great day with him.”

Tragically, Harmon’s mother Tiffany Saine passed away shortly after his draft selection; football remains his focus amidst personal grief.

“I’m doing the best I can,” stated Harmon during rookie minicamp activities.”I’m still dealing with it but putting one foot forward each day.”

Harmon acknowledged aligning well within team culture stating: “You’ve got to have some grit to be part of this organization…a bit an edge…play pridefully…I feel like that’s me.”
