The Pittsburgh Steelers selected offensive tackle Max Iheanachor from Arizona State with the 21st overall pick in the first round of the 2026 NFL Draft, according to an April 24 announcement.
This selection is significant for both the team and Iheanachor, who was a key player at Arizona State and now joins a franchise known for its history and success. The Steelers have achieved six Super Bowl championships throughout their history, according to the official website. The organization is also recognized for honoring past players through its Hall of Honor and maintaining strong community engagement, as outlined on their official website.
Iheanachor described his reaction to being drafted as emotional and overwhelming. “It meant the world. It was a surreal feeling,” said Iheanachor. “Can’t describe it. No other feeling like that. It was a once in a lifetime experience for sure. I am still very emotional right now. Just really grateful for the opportunity. Ready to come in and get some work.” He added, “I am really excited for the opportunity… Getting ready to come in and compete. I am ready.” He also credited his faith by saying, “Be shout out to God. Without him none of this would be possible.”
During his college career, Iheanachor did not allow a sack during his senior season at Arizona State and started 31 out of 32 games played overall. Coach Mike McCarthy praised him by saying, “He’s great for us. A stud of a young man… he just kept growing and growing through the evaluation.” Iheanachor earned All-Big 12 Second Team honors in 2025 after providing elite pass protection across nearly five hundred snaps without allowing any sacks.
The Steelers are affiliated with the National Football League as one of its member franchises, based on information from their official website. Fans can learn more about team history at Acrisure Stadium’s Hall of Honor Museum, which displays artifacts commemorating significant achievements such as multiple Super Bowl wins and inductions into their Hall of Honor.
Looking ahead, Iheanachor said he plans to approach his rookie season with determination: “A guy that is going to come in and work hard,” said Iheanachor. “Still be a sponge… Whatever it is, I am willing to do… Ready to compete… Come in and just work hard.”
