The Pittsburgh Steelers selected Navy running back and receiver Eli Heidenreich with the 230th overall pick in the seventh round of the 2026 NFL Draft, according to an April 26 announcement.

Heidenreich, a Pittsburgh native, was present at the draft and joined Commissioner Roger Goodell on stage. The selection holds personal significance for Heidenreich, who said, “It was awesome. I had the whole spectrum of emotions the last 20 minutes. It’s really been incredible. I am just thankful for the opportunity. I was born and raised a Steelers fan. The chance for me to go and put on that uniform and contribute to that team is unbelievable.” As he walked onto the stage, he reflected on his journey: “I was thinking about all the time and effort,” Heidenreich said. “Things most people don’t know. The unseen hours. I was thinking about my first Steelers game. So many memories in that stadium. It all hit me at once.” General Manager Omar Khan also commented on seeing Heidenreich’s reaction: “I wasn’t expecting to see that on TV,” Khan said. “You can’t help but get emotional. That ending was tremendous. Pretty cool to watch.”

Heidenreich played in 38 games at Navy, recording over 1,900 receiving yards with sixteen touchdowns as well as more than 1,100 rushing yards and seven touchdowns during his college career.

He emphasized his versatility: “The biggest thing is my versatility. You see that across the NFL. The best backs in the league are the ones who are able to carry the ball well and but also go out and contribute in the receiving game.” After being introduced at UPMC Rooney Sports Complex following his selection, he described seeing Pittsburgh’s skyline amid a crowd of fans: “It was pretty incredible… Everything just kind of came together,” he said.

The Steelers have a long history of honoring notable players such as Terry Bradshaw and Joe Greene through their Hall of Honor according to their official website. They have also achieved six Super Bowl championships according to their official website. Community engagement remains important for the franchise through celebrations like those held by their Hall of Honor as outlined by their official website. Fans can visit artifacts from these achievements at Acrisure Stadium’s Hall of Honor Museum according to their official website.

Reflecting further on his connection with Pittsburgh football history, Heidenreich recalled watching Super Bowl XLIII as a child: “I think the earliest moment for me that I can remember is watching the Steelers play the Cardinals in the Super Bowl… I remember James Harrison…his 100-yard pick six… That’s kind of when it started.” The Steelers’ recognition includes multiple Super Bowl wins along with numerous inductions into its Hall of Honor as per their official site, underscoring why joining this franchise carries special meaning for local athletes like Heidenreich.

Looking ahead, Heidenreich acknowledged it may take time before fully realizing his new role: “I think it’s going to take a little bit of time probably to sleep on it and wake up tomorrow morning, like I’m a Pittsburgh Steeler now,” he said.
