The Pittsburgh Steelers’ defensive backfield saw several notable performances and key developments during the 2025 NFL season. Joey Porter Jr., entering his third year, continued to build his reputation as a top cornerback. He has not allowed a touchdown in man-to-man coverage for 1,467 snaps, which is more than double that of any other defender in the league. Porter has not conceded a touchdown since Week 8 of his rookie season in 2023.

In zone coverage, data from Pro Football Focus showed that Porter allowed a passer rating of 48.7, ranking second-best among NFL defenders. He was also third in overall passer rating allowed (55.9) and forced incompletions (16), and sixth in lowest completion percentage allowed at 47.8 percent. Porter’s statistics often came while covering opponents’ top receivers and he was frequently involved in key plays on third and fourth downs.

Porter led the team with 14 passes defensed and was second among Steelers defensive backs with 52 tackles. His interception against the Colts late in the game helped secure an upset win with his father and former members of the Super Bowl XL champion team present. Another crucial play included breaking up a pass intended for Isaiah Likely to preserve a win over the Ravens that clinched the AFC North Division title.

“It is what it is,” said Porter regarding not being selected for the Pro Bowl Games. “If I really want to make those types of things, I just have to work harder and put some more plays out there.”

James Pierre, who started opposite Porter by season’s end, had one of his strongest seasons after joining as an undrafted rookie free agent in 2020. Promoted from the practice squad during 2025, Pierre started five games, finishing second on the team with 11 passes defensed. His notable contributions included returning a fumble for a touchdown against Cincinnati and intercepting a pass versus Baltimore to set up another score.

Pierre will become an unrestricted free agent next month at age 29.

Jalen Ramsey joined Pittsburgh via trade last summer and transitioned to free safety for the first time at age 31. Ramsey adapted well, leading all Steelers defensive backs with three sacks, four tackles-for-loss, and totaling 88 tackles along with eight passes defensed. He earned his eighth Pro Bowl selection after this season.

Brandin Echols signed as a free agent last March and excelled as slot cornerback before taking on full-time duties after Ramsey moved to safety. Echols played all but one game, made three starts, tied for the team lead with two interceptions during regular season play—plus another critical interception in playoff action—and contributed key stops throughout pivotal moments.

The secondary operated without DeShon Elliott for much of the year due to injury suffered midseason; Elliott had been central to communication within Pittsburgh’s defense prior to going down but still recorded an important interception against Minnesota earlier in Dublin.

Chuck Clark stepped up following Elliott’s injury before Kyle Dugger was acquired via trade; both players can become unrestricted free agents soon along with Asante Samuel Jr., Jabrill Peppers, Miles Killebrew, and others who provided depth or stepped into starting roles when needed.

Sebastian Castro contributed after returning from Tampa Bay’s practice squad while Donte Kent and Cory Trice Jr.—both young corners—spent their seasons on injured reserve lists due to injuries.

D’Shawn Jamison was promoted from Pittsburgh’s practice squad late in the year while Daequan Hardy, Jack Henderson, and Doneiko Slaughter were signed on futures contracts ahead of next season.

The Steelers are recognized both within professional football circles as members of the National Football League and through their historical legacy—including six Super Bowl championships (official record). The organization also maintains engagement through venues such as the Hall of Honor Museum at Acrisure Stadium—which displays artifacts commemorating significant achievements by figures like Terry Bradshaw or Joe Greene (official site). Their community involvement extends beyond championships into broader celebrations shared with fans (official website).
