With the 2025 season approaching, Steelers.com is revisiting memorable games against each of their opponents. This edition highlights a past game against the New York Jets.
On January 15, 2005, at Heinz Field (now Acrisure Stadium), the Pittsburgh Steelers faced off against the New York Jets in a tense matchup that extended into overtime. The game concluded with a victory for the Steelers, thanks to kicker Jeff Reed’s decisive field goal, securing their spot in the AFC Championship game.
Reflecting on the game, Coach Bill Cowher acknowledged the effort by their opponents: “What can you say about the game? The first thing that comes to mind is the effort by the New York Jets,” he said. He also praised his team’s resilience: “Let me say this about our football team, we are resilient.”
The Steelers initially took a 10-0 lead with contributions from Jeff Reed and Jerome Bettis. Their defense also played a crucial role early on by forcing punts and intercepting Chad Pennington’s pass.
However, special teams returner Santana Moss turned momentum for the Jets with a punt return touchdown. Quarterback Ben Roethlisberger then threw an interception returned for another touchdown by Reggie Tongue, putting the Jets ahead.
Roethlisberger later tied it up with a drive culminating in a touchdown pass to Hines Ward. Despite an interception during overtime giving Doug Brien of the Jets a chance to end it with a field goal, Brien missed wide left.
The Steelers capitalized on this opportunity when Roethlisberger led them downfield once more and Jeff Reed sealed their win with his kick. Reflecting on advancing further in playoffs, Hines Ward remarked: “It’s just great to be able to continue playing.”
