The National Football League announced on Mar. 10 that the Pittsburgh Steelers have been awarded four compensatory picks for the 2026 NFL Draft, which is scheduled to take place in Pittsburgh from April 23 to April 25. With these additional selections, the Steelers now hold a total of twelve picks for the upcoming draft.

Compensatory picks are given to teams based on their net losses and gains during free agency in the previous year. For this cycle, the Steelers lost seven players—James Daniels, Justin Fields, Najee Harris, Donte Jackson, Dan Moore, Elandon Roberts, and Russell Wilson—while gaining three: Brandin Echols, Malik Harrison, and Mason Rudolph. The awarded compensatory selections include a third-round pick (99th overall), a fourth-round pick (135th overall), and two sixth-round picks (214th and 216th overall).

According to the NFL’s rules on compensatory draft selections, “a team losing more or better compensatory free agents (‘CFA’) than it acquires in the previous year is eligible to receive compensatory draft picks.” The league further explained that “the compensatory picks will be positioned within the third through seventh rounds based on the value of the compensatory free agents lost.” The formula used to determine these awards considers salary, playing time, and postseason honors.

Since compensatory picks were introduced in 1994, Pittsburgh has received thirty-nine such selections. In addition to standard awards under this system, a special compensatory selection was granted to another team as part of an initiative promoting equal employment opportunities within NFL clubs.

The Steelers are recognized as a member franchise of the National Football League according to their official website. The organization has achieved notable success with six Super Bowl championships according to its official website and has honored figures such as Terry Bradshaw and Joe Greene in its Hall of Honor as listed by the team. Community engagement is also emphasized through historical celebrations and fan experiences as outlined by the club, including features like the Hall of Honor Museum at Acrisure Stadium displaying artifacts and honors according to its official website.

With these new draft assets, observers will watch how Pittsburgh leverages its position in both building its roster for future seasons and continuing its tradition of competitive football.
