With the 2025 NFL season approaching, Steelers.com is revisiting memorable games against each of their opponents. This edition focuses on a significant match against the Chicago Bears.

On December 11, 2005, at Heinz Field (now Acrisure Stadium), the Pittsburgh Steelers faced a crucial game after three consecutive losses. The team needed a victory to keep their playoff hopes alive.

Running back Willie Parker started the game, but it was Jerome Bettis who made a lasting impact with 17 carries for 101 yards and two touchdowns. His performance was pivotal in securing a 21-9 win over the Bears.

“Enough can’t be said about Jerome Bettis,” stated receiver Hines Ward. “He epitomizes what the Steelers are all about. People think he’s down and out and he comes out and has a game like he had.”

Bettis’ role was usually to support Parker, but snowy conditions played to his strengths as a runner known for thriving in adverse weather. “My role is to come in and spell Willie, but this game set up for me in terms of the conditions and the field,” Bettis explained post-game.

A key moment came when Bettis confronted Bears linebacker Brian Urlacher during his five-yard touchdown run in the third quarter. Despite Urlacher’s efforts, Bettis powered through to score. “I knew it was him,” recalled Bettis. “I was able to bang off of him and use his leverage against him.”

The Steelers concluded their regular season with three more victories before winning three playoff games on the road, ultimately defeating the Seattle Seahawks in Super Bowl XL.
