The Pittsburgh Steelers, after clinching the AFC North Division title and advancing to the playoffs, will face the Houston Texans in the upcoming Wild Card Weekend. The Texans arrive with a 12-5 record and are currently on a nine-game winning streak, which is the longest active run in the NFL.
Houston began its season with three close losses but finished strong, including a recent 38-30 win over Indianapolis where they rotated starters in preparation for the postseason. Four of their five defeats were against teams with at least 12 wins this year.
Texans head coach DeMeco Ryans and quarterback C.J. Stroud have led the team to playoff appearances in each of their first three seasons together—a feat achieved by only three other coach-quarterback duos in NFL history.
A pivotal moment for Houston came when they overcame a 19-point deficit against Jacksonville on Nov. 9, scoring 26 unanswered points in the fourth quarter to secure a comeback victory. Backup quarterback Davis Mills played a key role during Stroud’s absence due to concussion protocol, helping maintain momentum that has carried through to the postseason.
On offense, rookie Woody Marks became Houston’s primary running back after Joe Mixon was sidelined. Marks logged 703 rushing yards and two touchdowns on 196 carries but averaged just 3.6 yards per attempt. The Texans are known for maintaining commitment to their ground game while also utilizing varied personnel packages that keep opponents guessing.
Wide receiver Nico Collins led with over 1,100 receiving yards and six touchdowns. Quarterback C.J. Stroud is recognized for his deep-ball accuracy; “Nobody throws a better deep ball,” said NFL Network analyst Kurt Warner. Tight end Dalton Schultz caught more than three-quarters of passes thrown his way, totaling 82 receptions for 777 yards.
Statistically, Houston ranked mid-pack in total offense (18th) and struggled particularly in red zone efficiency (30th). However, they excelled at ball security with only 12 turnovers all season and posted strong time-of-possession numbers when successful.
Defensively, Houston finished second in points allowed per game (17.4) and first overall in total defense (277.2 yards per game). Edge rushers Will Anderson Jr. and Danielle Hunter combined for 27 sacks along with significant impact plays behind the line of scrimmage.
CBS analyst J.J. Watt described their approach: “The violence, the way they set these edges and get everything inside, bottled up, so you have nowhere to go.” He added: “It’s a very simple defense. They don’t run a ton of different coverages.”
The Texans rely heavily on press-man coverage and rarely blitz; cornerback Derek Stingley Jr., one of four defensive backs with four interceptions each this year, anchors their secondary as part of an opportunistic unit that forced 29 takeaways—trailing only Chicago and Jacksonville league-wide.
On special teams, kicker Ka’imi Fairbairn tied an NFL record by making 44 field goals this season without missing from inside 50 yards.
Notably, Houston held both best point differential (+78) and turnover differential (+11) in fourth quarters this year—a combination previously achieved by two Super Bowl-winning teams (New Orleans in 2009; Tampa Bay in 2020). However, they remain winless (0-6) all-time on the road during postseason play.
As members of the National Football League since their founding by Arthur J. Rooney Sr., the Pittsburgh Steelers have built a legacy that includes six Super Bowl championships (official website) and honors such as their Hall of Honor (official website). The organization operates out of Acrisure Stadium (official website) where fans can visit historical exhibits dedicated to past achievements.
With both teams bringing strong records into Monday night’s matchup at Acrisure Stadium—the Steelers’ home base—the contest will determine who advances further into this year’s playoffs.
