The Pittsburgh Steelers are preparing for the upcoming training camp at Saint Vincent College, set to begin on July 23. The team’s focus is on refining their running back lineup as they aim to build on their strong rushing performance from last season, where they ranked among the top four in the league with 533 carries.
Arthur Smith, the offensive coordinator, has a specific vision for the team’s running game, centered around outside zone schemes. This approach led to a shift in personnel decisions during the offseason. Despite Najee Harris’s consistent performance over four seasons, he was not re-signed due to his fit within this scheme.
Jaylen Warren emerges as the lead back entering his fourth NFL season. Known for his proficiency as a third-down runner and pass blocker, Warren has also been effective as a receiver out of the backfield. However, concerns about workload capacity have led to drafting Kaleb Johnson in the third round. Johnson brings notable credentials from college football, having led the Big Ten in rushing yards and touchdowns while averaging 6.4 yards per carry.
The Steelers also acquired Kenneth Gainwell through free agency. Previously backing up Saquon Barkley with Philadelphia, Gainwell is recognized for his speed and ability to catch passes effectively. He will be utilized both as a runner and kick returner.
Veteran Cordarrelle Patterson remains part of the squad but experienced reduced kick return opportunities last season due to teams avoiding him strategically. Changes in kickoff rules may offer him more chances this year.
Evan Hull and Trey Sermon join Pittsburgh seeking career rejuvenation after dealing with challenges earlier in their professional journeys. Hull’s injuries limited his playtime with Indianapolis, while Sermon aims to capitalize on past experiences with San Francisco.
Rounding out the roster are rookies Max Hurleman and DJ Thomas-Jones. Hurleman offers potential versatility as both a running back and wide receiver, whereas Thomas-Jones is positioned as a fullback needing to prove himself on special teams.
Dale Lolley notes these developments during “SNR Drive” on Steelers Nation Radio.
