The Pittsburgh Steelers are preparing for their upcoming training camp at Saint Vincent College on July 23, with a focus on the safety position. The team currently has five full-time safeties following the trade of Minkah Fitzpatrick to acquire Jalen Ramsey and Jonnu Smith.

DeShon Elliott, who had an impressive season in 2024, has signed a two-year contract extension with the Steelers. Last year, he achieved a career-high of 108 tackles, including four for loss, six pass breakups, one interception, two forced fumbles, and three fumble recoveries.

Juan Thornhill joins the Steelers after recording eight interceptions during his first four seasons in Kansas City but none in his last two seasons with Cleveland. The team hopes that a change of environment will help him regain his form.

Miles Killebrew remains a key player on special teams but has limited defensive playtime. At 32 years old and with five career starts, his role may not expand significantly.

Rookie Sebastian Castro was signed soon after the draft and is seen as a potential asset despite being undrafted. Iowa head coach Kirk Ferentz praised Castro’s talent and believes he will perform well in Pittsburgh.

Quindell Johnson is another undrafted player who has spent time with multiple NFL teams but only appeared in three games so far.

The Steelers might consider adding more experience to their safety lineup depending on how they plan to utilize Jalen Ramsey.

“We’ve sent quite a few defensive backs to the league over the past few years,” said Iowa head coach Kirk Ferentz. “And Sebastian is as talented as any of them. I think he’ll do well there.”
