The UPMC Rooney Sports Complex recently hosted a three-day minicamp, with football as the primary focus. However, players had another sport on their minds: golf. The U.S. Open is being held at Oakmont Country Club in Pittsburgh, and several players plan to attend once the minicamp concludes.

Lucas Glover, a golfer with connections to the Steelers, will be competing in the tournament. Glover won the U.S. Open in 2009 and has strong ties to the Steelers through his grandfather, Dick Hendley, who played for the team in 1951. “My grandfather played there in the 50s,” said Glover. “So, I grew up watching them with him.”

Glover’s interest in sports was nurtured by his grandfather. “He’s the one that got me started in sports,” Glover explained. His passion for football is partly due to his grandfather’s influence and his fondness for the Steelers organization.

“Tradition and model organization,” said Glover about what draws him to the Steelers. He appreciates their stability and family-like atmosphere: “It’s just a model organization.”

As multiple Steelers players are expected at Oakmont this weekend, Glover looks forward to their support on the course. “That will be awesome,” he said.
