Steelers players and a team legend recently explored Ireland and Germany, experiencing the local culture and sports scene. Tight end Pat Freiermuth and Hall of Famer Rod Woodson visited Ireland, while safety Miles Killebrew traveled to Germany.
Freiermuth and Woodson spent time in Ireland, where they engaged in various activities. Freiermuth attended a Six Nations rugby match between Ireland and France and participated as a coin toss captain for an American Football Ireland game. Woodson learned about Gaelic football and hurling from GAA stars. Together, they enjoyed Irish street food, attended an NFL Flag event at Croke Park, and toured the stadium.
Croke Park will host the Steelers during their 2025 season game in Dublin. “I enjoyed it a lot,” said Freiermuth about his visit to Dublin. “Before I came here to Dublin, I was very excited that we get to play in Ireland, and then experiencing this trip, the rugby match and seeing the fans, it makes me even more excited to be a part of it.”
Woodson shared his enthusiasm for returning to Ireland: “What I love about going there is it’s rooted in history,” he said. “Every time I go over there it gets better and better.”
Meanwhile, Killebrew’s trip to Germany included attending a soccer match between Borussia Dortmund and Augsburg. He was escorted onto the pitch by former player Patrick Owomoyela. “I didn’t know I was going to be able to go out there onto the actual pitch,” Killebrew remarked.
Killebrew noted the intensity of German soccer fans: “It was a little intimidating turning the corner and seeing 25,000 fans standing up in just a small section,” he said.
The experiences abroad left lasting impressions on all three Steelers representatives as they embraced new cultures while engaging with international sports communities.
