The Pittsburgh Steelers announced on Apr. 26 how their newest draft picks are expected to fit into the team, focusing on special teams and versatile roles across the roster.
The announcement highlights how each rookie’s unique skill set may contribute to both immediate needs and long-term development for the Steelers, a franchise known for its rich history in the National Football League according to the official website.
Kaden Wetjen, drafted as a return specialist from Iowa, was described by special teams coordinator Danny Crossman as “our top rated dual-return player.” Wetjen led the Big Ten in several return categories last season. Crossman said, “In this new dynamic kickoff age of the National Football League, to have a guy who, in our opinion, is very good at both, we think is going to be a major addition and pay dividends for the club.” He also praised Wetjen’s decision-making and ball security: “He is what I refer to as a catch-run-cut player… He is fearless and he’s not going to make the cuts until he has to.”
Riley Nowakowski was selected as a fullback after transferring from Wisconsin to Indiana. Running backs coach Ramon Chinyoung Sr. said about Nowakowski: “He’s shown on tape that he has an ability to navigate through the backfield. The young man plays with grit… He’s growing as a backfield blocker.” Chinyoung also noted Nowakowski’s background as a linebacker brings physicality: “You can see that dog, that physicality style of play that he brings.”
Gabriel Rubio follows his father Angel Rubio’s legacy with Pittsburgh nearly four decades later. Defensive coordinator Patrick Graham said of Gabriel Rubio: “At this point, the more positions they can play, the better off they’ll be… He’s an interior defensive lineman… he’s a solid football player.” Coach Mike McCarthy called this defensive line group his biggest ever coached.
Safety Robert Spears-Jennings joins after posting one of the fastest times at his position during this year’s NFL Combine. Assistant head coach Joe Whitt Jr. said Spears-Jennings has “the skill set we were looking for earlier” but noted other needs took priority earlier in the draft.
Eli Heidenriech rounds out Pittsburgh’s selections with experience at running back and wide receiver from Navy; he also returned kicks during college.
The Steelers’ history includes six Super Bowl championships according to their official website, Hall of Honor inductees such as Terry Bradshaw and Joe Greene as listed on their website, community engagement efforts through historical celebrations as outlined online, and displays at Acrisure Stadium’s Hall of Honor Museum according to team sources. The team’s ongoing recognition includes multiple Super Bowl wins alongside Hall of Honor inductions as per official records.
