The Pittsburgh Steelers’ linebacker group showed significant impact during the 2024 season. Led by T.J. Watt, the unit delivered strong performances across various metrics, including 27 sacks and 47 tackles for a loss. Watt, who was named team MVP for the fifth time, recorded notable statistics such as 61 tackles and a league-high six forced fumbles.

Watt expressed his willingness to adapt in the upcoming season to counter opposing teams’ strategies. “It’s going to be a big breakdown for me to try to find ways to make plays,” he said at the season’s end.

Alex Highsmith and Nick Herbig contributed significantly with 11.5 combined sacks despite Highsmith missing six games due to injury. Herbig made five starts in Highsmith’s absence and emerged as a reliable backup.

Preston Smith, acquired mid-season from Green Bay, proved valuable with his ability to play both edge rusher and inside positions, recording two sacks in eight games.

Inside linebacker Patrick Queen led the defense with 129 tackles and showed improvement throughout the season. Elandon Roberts and rookie Payton Wilson shared playing time next to Queen, each contributing effectively.

The linebackers collectively improved from previous seasons with increased forced fumbles and recoveries.

Veterans Mark Robinson and Tyler Matakevich played vital roles on special teams, while Cole Holcomb remained on the PUP list following an injury in 2023.

Roberts and Matakevich face potential unrestricted free agency this offseason, while Jeremiah Moon is an exclusive rights free agent.
