The Pittsburgh Steelers faced a challenging defeat against the Kansas City Chiefs, losing 29-10 on Christmas Day at Acrisure Stadium. Head Coach Mike Tomlin expressed his dissatisfaction with the team’s performance, emphasizing fundamental issues that need addressing.
“That sucked, to be blunt,” Tomlin stated during the postgame press conference. He highlighted turnovers as a significant problem, saying, “We’re turning the ball over. We’re not getting turnovers.” Quarterback Russell Wilson threw an interception, and tight end Pat Freiermuth fumbled, both contributing to missed opportunities for the Steelers.
Tomlin pointed out several chances where the team failed to capitalize on potential turnovers. “We had balls on the ground early… We didn’t cover it,” he said. The coach stressed that without correcting these mistakes, they would continue to struggle against strong opponents like the Chiefs.
Despite this being their third consecutive loss, Tomlin remains optimistic about resolving these issues before facing the Cincinnati Bengals next week. “It’s fundamental things,” he noted. “We’ve got to look at ourselves and own it.”
Quarterback Russell Wilson echoed Tomlin’s sentiments about overcoming adversity. “There’s going to be adversity in every season,” Wilson remarked. He believes in his teammates’ character and is confident they can turn things around before playoffs begin.
Wilson acknowledged that scoring more points is crucial for future success. “I think it’s going to be all about us making plays,” he said, focusing on improving offensive execution in upcoming games.
Linebacker T.J. Watt emphasized hard work as key to bouncing back from this defeat. “We need to work more,” Watt stated simply when asked how they could improve their defensive pressure after failing to sack Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes.
Watt remains committed to leading by example as they prepare for their regular-season finale against Cincinnati and potential playoff games ahead.
