The Pittsburgh Steelers faced a setback with a 27-13 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles at Lincoln Financial Field. Despite the defeat, they secured a playoff spot due to losses by the Miami Dolphins and Indianapolis Colts. The Dolphins were defeated by the Houston Texans, while the Colts fell to the Denver Broncos.
Coach Mike Tomlin acknowledged the Eagles’ victory but emphasized areas for improvement. “First, I want to compliment the Eagles on a hard-fought victory,” said Tomlin. He noted coaching and playing shortfalls, highlighting missed tackles and turnovers as critical issues.
Quarterback Russell Wilson struggled, completing only 14 passes for 128 yards and one touchdown. Najee Harris contributed six carries for 14 yards but fumbled, leading to an Eagles touchdown. “We started slow,” said Tomlin about the offense’s performance.
Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts excelled with 25 completions for 290 yards and two touchdowns. “I just thought that we didn’t win enough possession downs,” stated Tomlin.
Injuries also plagued the Steelers, with linebacker T.J. Watt, cornerback Donte Jackson, and quarterback Justin Fields leaving the game. “From a health standpoint, Justin Fields had an abdominal injury,” reported Tomlin.
Russell Wilson highlighted third-and-long situations as problematic. “In the first half, we had way too many third-and-longs,” he said.
Looking ahead, Wilson stressed the importance of responding in their upcoming game against the Baltimore Ravens. The Steelers hold a slight lead over the Ravens in AFC North standings.
Defensive tackle Cameron Heyward reflected on complementary football not being achieved during Sunday’s game. “I think we didn’t get off the field enough on defense,” he commented.
Despite clinching a playoff berth, Heyward expressed ambition beyond merely reaching postseason play: “There’s bigger fish to fry.”
The Steelers will face another challenge against Baltimore Ravens this Saturday with significant implications in AFC North standings.
