The Pittsburgh Steelers have elevated running backs Lew Nichols and Trey Sermon from the practice squad to the Active/Inactive Roster for Sunday’s game against the Indianapolis Colts at Acrisure Stadium. Both players will return to the practice squad after the game.
Nichols joined the Steelers during training camp in 2025. He was selected by the Green Bay Packers in the seventh round of the 2023 NFL Draft and spent most of that season on their Reserve/Injured List. He later spent time on the Philadelphia Eagles’ practice squad. In college, Nichols played at Central Michigan, where he led the nation with 1,710 rushing yards in 2021 and was named Mid-American Conference Offensive Player of the Year that same year.
Sermon signed with Pittsburgh following a tryout during this year’s rookie minicamp and has previous experience being elevated for games against both New England Patriots and Minnesota Vikings. Over four seasons, Sermon has played in 44 games, starting five times. He has carried the ball 134 times for 505 yards and scored three touchdowns. Most recently, he spent two years with Indianapolis Colts, appearing in 31 games with three starts and recording 91 carries for 319 yards and two touchdowns. Prior to that, he played for both Philadelphia Eagles (2022) and San Francisco 49ers (2021).
