The Pittsburgh Steelers have experienced periods of frequent draft trades, especially during the Buddy Parker era from 1957 to 1964 when the team traded away future draft picks. However, under coach Chuck Noll, who took charge after Parker, the Steelers adopted a different approach. In Noll’s 23 seasons, he traded a draft pick only once – trading a third-round pick to Oakland in 1973 for Tom Keating. The Steelers enacted a policy change in 2003, which saw them trading with Kansas City to move up in the first round to select safety Troy Polamalu from USC. Since then, the Steelers have moved up in the first round three more times.

In 2006, they moved from 36th to 25th to select wide receiver Santonio Holmes. In 2019, the team traded up from 20th to 10th in the draft to pick inside linebacker Devin Bush. Most recently, in 2023, the Steelers moved up from 17th to 14th to pick offensive tackle Broderick Jones.

Regarding concerns about losing compensatory picks, it’s made clear that compensatory formulas only consider unrestricted free agents lost and signed. Players like Aaron Rodgers, who was cut by the New York Jets, do not affect this formula when signed by another team.

In discussing historical player selections, Joe Greene’s impact as a rookie was remarkable. Despite some initial controversy, Greene quickly proved his worth when he signed with the Steelers and joined full practice. He impressed his teammates early on, participating in the Oklahoma Drill, which solidified his status as a top player. Greene finished his rookie season as a 14-game starter, Pro Bowl selectee, and the Defensive Rookie of the Year.

On the topic of potential draft strategies, it is discussed that the Steelers might consider adding a running back, given their current roster. The draft reportedly has good depth in this position. The inquiry into drafting quarterback Seth Henigan from Memphis highlights realistic expectations, as he is projected to be a candidate for a practice squad or the bottom of a roster.

Lastly, on the defensive alignment and contractual matters, it is shared that defensive strategy is influenced by the opponent’s formations and attack strategies. Additionally, there is no financial commitment to players signed to one- or two-year contracts if they do not make the 53-man roster unless guaranteed money is part of the agreement.
