Pictures capture moments in time, some remembered and others unseen. Steelers.com has launched ‘Picture Perfect,’ a series featuring historical photos of the Pittsburgh Steelers, focusing on three iconic wide receivers: Lynn Swann, Hines Ward, and John Stallworth.
The trio was celebrated at Heinz Field during the team’s 80th season in 2012. They are all members of the Steelers Hall of Honor, with Swann and Stallworth also inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Swann entered the Hall in 2001 after a long wait. “Waiting is always tough,” he said, reflecting on his induction day.
Swann was known for his graceful moves and big-stage performances. He won MVP honors at Super Bowl X after making four receptions for 161 yards and a touchdown. “My big catches that day are what people remember,” he recalled.
Stallworth joined Swann in the Hall of Fame in 2002. During his enshrinement speech, he shared how his initial impression of Pittsburgh changed after winning Super Bowl IX. “I’ve learned that first impressions are not always correct,” Stallworth noted.
Hines Ward remains hopeful for his Hall of Fame induction after being a semifinalist for nine consecutive years. Known for his versatility and blocking ability, Ward played 14 seasons with the Steelers, amassing significant career statistics including 1,000 receptions.
Ward’s impact extended beyond statistics; he was known for his toughness on the field. “He was huge for me,” said Jerome Bettis about Ward’s blocking skills.
Ward retired in 2012 but remains connected to Steeler Nation. “All-in-all, I can say I am a Steeler for life,” Ward expressed during retirement.
As fans await Ward’s potential induction into the Hall of Fame, these three players remain integral to Steelers history through their contributions both on and off the field.
