The Pittsburgh Steelers are gearing up for their upcoming training camp at Saint Vincent College on July 23, with a focus on strengthening their defensive line. Following a challenging playoff loss to the Ravens, where they allowed nearly 300 rushing yards, the team has made strategic additions and changes to their roster.

Newcomers Daniel Ekuale and Esezi Otomewo have joined through free agency, while Derrick Harmon and Yahya Black were acquired via the draft. These moves aim to create a robust rotation that can alleviate some of the workload from veteran All-Pro Cameron Heyward. In 2024, Heyward played 71 percent of the team’s defensive snaps, contributing significantly to limiting opponents’ rushing attempts.

Derrick Harmon is seen as a potential successor to Heyward. NFL executives have drawn comparisons between Harmon and Heyward during pre-draft evaluations. The Steelers hope that Harmon, alongside Keeanu Benton—a second-round pick in 2023—will form a solid foundation for the team’s defense in future seasons.

Benton’s role in the defense has grown since his rookie year. His snap count increased from 43 percent to 59 percent last season as he lined up next to Heyward in various defensive packages. While Benton has shown promise as a pass rusher with 24 pressures in 2024, converting these into sacks remains an area for improvement.

The offseason saw Larry Ogunjobi and Montravius Adams released to make room for new talent. Ekuale brings experience from starting games with the Patriots last season, while Otomewo adds depth after his time with the Jaguars.

Returning players like Isaiahh Loudermilk, Dean Lowry, and DeMarvin Leal add veteran presence to the lineup. Leal is particularly noteworthy as he returns from an injury-plagued season after gaining weight for added strength this year.

With promising young talents such as Yahya Black and Logan Lee joining veterans on the roster, competition among defensive linemen is expected to be intense during training camp.
