The Pittsburgh Steelers welcomed players back to the UPMC Rooney Sports Complex on April 8 for the first day of voluntary workouts, marking the start of Phase One of the National Football League’s offseason program under new head coach Mike McCarthy.

This early start is significant as it allows both returning veterans and newcomers to build relationships, learn a new playbook, and get acquainted with McCarthy’s staff. Linebacker Alex Highsmith said, “It’s always cool to come back and see all the guys. It’s good to be back in the building. And everyone being here today, all the veteran faces, everyone showing up. It’s really cool.” Highsmith also noted that having veterans present sets an example for younger players: “I think when the veterans show up, and they’re here, it shows the young guys they are committed, and that we’re all in.”

Ten teams across the league started their offseason programs early due to coaching changes. The current phase focuses on meetings, strength training, and rehabilitation rather than field practices. Defensive tackle Sebastian Joseph-Day said he values this time for camaraderie: “It’s always great to be around the coaches and players and build that camaraderie early… I feel like it all carries over once the season starts.” Safety Jaquan Brisker added that getting familiar with teammates and coaches is crucial: “You want to give your best first impression… just getting familiar with the building, the players, [and] coaches… is really important.”

Second-year defensive tackle Derrick Harmon said participating fully this year helps set expectations: “It’s way easier this time around because you know what to expect… being in the building this early is great.” Harmon emphasized relationship-building between players and coaches before training camp begins.

The Steelers’ history includes six Super Bowl championships according to their official website, along with numerous Hall of Honor inductees such as Terry Bradshaw and Joe Greene as listed by team records. The franchise engages fans through its Hall of Honor Museum at Acrisure Stadium according to official information.

Brisker described entering team facilities as inspiring: “Just walking in… being able to have another opportunity to play football… is just a blessing.” He added that seeing reminders of past successes motivates current players: “When you walk past those six Super Bowl trophies… it just gives you chills.” The Steelers remain one of National Football League’s recognized franchises based on official sources.
