With the Steelers’ training camp underway in Latrobe, Pennsylvania, Coach Mike Tomlin expressed satisfaction with the team’s first practice session. “A really good first day,” said Tomlin. He noted that the heat contributed to physical development and appreciated the presence of fans at Saint Vincent.
The session marked Aaron Rodgers’ debut in a Steelers jersey. Despite showcasing his arm talent, Rodgers experienced a rocky start when Patrick Queen intercepted his pass intended for DK Metcalf during an 11-on-11 drill. This highlighted the adjustment period for new players like Rodgers and Jalen Ramsey as they integrate into the team.
Tomlin emphasized the importance of teaching these newcomers about the team’s values and practices. “You know, when in Rome, he’s going to be Roman,” he remarked regarding Rodgers’ adaptation process.
Kaleb Johnson stood out during practice with impressive runs through the defense. Tomlin praised Johnson’s conditioning, stating it allowed him to take additional reps and improve his performance.
Veteran tight end Jonnu Smith and rookie quarterback Will Howard both commented on Rodgers’ effective communication style. Tomlin was not surprised by their feedback, acknowledging Rodgers’ experience and communication skills as vital for team cohesion.
In one notable play, Alex Highsmith demonstrated his defensive prowess against Broderick Jones, leading to a friendly exchange between Jones and Rodgers afterward.
Regarding injuries, Tomlin reported only minor issues typical of a first-day practice, including some heat-related illnesses but nothing significant.
