The Pittsburgh Steelers opened their veteran minicamp at UPMC Rooney Sports Complex on June 3, with coach Mike McCarthy highlighting strong participation from both seasoned players and rookies. McCarthy said, “We have excellent participation, which we have all year. We’re looking forward to a great day of work.”

This week’s minicamp aims to complete installations across all phases while providing players an early look at the regular season routine under McCarthy’s leadership. The team structured Tuesday’s session to mimic an in-season Thursday schedule so that players could better understand what to expect in September.

On the field, emphasis was placed on situational football, particularly the two-minute drill during 7-on-7 play. McCarthy said backup quarterbacks Mason Rudolph, Will Howard, and Drew Allar would handle these drills while veteran Aaron Rodgers observes. “The challenge, frankly, is trying to find reps for these guys,” McCarthy said. “For instance, today, we have three two-minute drills in 7-on-7. We’re going to let Mason [Rudolph] and the two young guys take it, so we’re trying to balance that out.” He added that Rodgers’ experience has been valuable for younger quarterbacks: “Obviously, with Aaron Rodgers, the experience and what he brings to the table — I’m not just talking about playing between the white lines but what he can add to a conversation in the quarterback room — has been extremely valuable for our younger players.”

McCarthy noted Rudolph’s role as a mentor due to his eight seasons of NFL experience: “Boy, I’ve really grown to have a lot of appreciation for Mason. I’m really enjoying our time together.” He also said Howard and Allar are learning quickly: “Will and Drew are just soaking it up, frankly,” McCarthy said.

Referee Ron Torbert and his officiating crew were present at practice as part of offseason preparation for both officials and players. McCarthy encouraged interaction between coaches or players and referees: “I think anytime you can increase your communication… that’s a positive thing,” he said.

McCarthy confirmed special teams assistant Derius Swinton II is no longer part of the coaching staff; hiring for an additional coach is ongoing.

The Pittsburgh Steelers are affiliated with the National Football League as a member franchise; they have achieved notable success including six Super Bowl championships and multiple inductions into their Hall of Honor according to their official website. The organization also contributes through community engagement efforts such as historical celebrations and operates the Hall of Honor Museum at Acrisure Stadium displaying artifacts from its history according to their official website.
